The cask is back!
Starting this Thursday, September 2, we will be bringing cask ale back to the Gulu on the first Thursday of every month. Starting us off will be Mayflower Brewing out of Plymouth. They’re hopping up their IPA with some Cascade hops for us. YUM!
Gulu loves the arts!
For the second year, Gulu-Gulu Café will be hosting an event for the Salem Literary Festival. First on Sunday September 19th at 4PM the Gulu is hosting the Salem Literary Festival poetry reading featuring David Blair, William Delman, Jill McDonough and David Rivard! And then on Saturday, September 18 join Quick Fiction here at Gulu-Gulu for a phenomenal line-up of readers, including Brian Evenson, Steve Almond, William Walsh, Kim Chinquee, Myfanwy Collins, and Michael Thurston. We don’t even know what to expect, other than a whole lot of utter amazement. 5:00 – 7:00pm.
Food & Drink!
Don’t forget, Gulu is now serving BREAKFAST 7 days a week until NOON!! Come down for a great breakfast crepe, some Belgian waffles, or a breakfast sandwich.
We’re always changing our beer lineup and September is no different. Come see what’s new!
New T-shirts & tote bags!
We now have Charlie, the pug, sporting our classic black “Do You Gulu?” tee’s. And check out our new tote bags! Come on in & check them out or go here to shop online!.
New menu items!
Did you know we added a bowl of pickles to our menu? There is also a brand new vegan wrap invented by our superstar server, Essjay. Look for it on the menu – yep, it’s called The Essjay. We have some fun cheeses for our Cheese & Meat Coalition, and you might notice avocados popping up in our menu! YUM!
And Now For Something Completely Different... Let the Cuteness Ensue!
Over two long and hot weekends in July, Montserrat College of Art alumnus Greg Orfanos donated his time and energy to create a public art project in Lapin Park.
The intent of this art project was to transform two of Salem's unsightly utility boxes into unique works of art. The city had approved the basic design of Greg's project and the Gulu paid for Greg's supplies and numerous cups of coffee.
The Gulu hopes that this is just the beginning for public art projects in the city. We believe that projects like this one help to contribute to the vitality and attractiveness of the urban streetscape and defer graffiti.

It's only a month old but the popularity of our funky breakfast offerings has been deep and passionate. Because YOU demanded it we will be extending our breakfast serving hours until noon starting this Saturday July 31st! Gulu Breakfast, everyday 8AM - 12PM! Yum!

Introducing … CASK BEER THURSDAYS! - Starting May 13th!
What is cask beer you ask? These ales are served right from the brewer’s cask at cellar temperatures. This means they are naturally carbonated, unfiltered beers. More often than not, these beers are unique from cask to cask – you’ll be drinking something one-of-a-kind. Cask beer (sometimes called “real ale”) is only good for a couple days, so don’t miss it. Gulu is one of the only places on the Northshore doing this. Cask is really taking off in Boston & Cambridge – let’s see what it’s all about!
Now for the details:
EVERY THURSDAY at 6:00
Cask will sit right on the bar.
The beer will be available until it runs out or at the end of the night on Fridays, whichever comes first.
Cape Ann Brewing in Gloucester will be our first featured brewery. TJ from Cape Ann will be introducing each of their beers and will be available to answer questions.
The line-up for May:
5/13 Cape Ann Brewing’s Fisherman’s West Indies Pale Ale brewed with cardamom
5/20 Cape Ann Brewing’s Fisherman’s Amber
5/27 Cape Ann Brewing’s Fisherman’s IPA
Come join us & let us know what you think! For more information on cask beer, check out http://www.nerax.org.
New Dessert!
Bring your mother to the Gulu for our new dessert: Blood Orange Mascarpone Mousse. It starts with a sponge cake bottom and is topped with a layer of mascarpone mousse, blood orange marmalade, and is finished with an edible candied pansy flower. Gorgeous!

Gulu NoHo Update - The Gulu-Gulu Cafe in Northampton MA is not to be
Regretfully we have decided that to pull out of the Gulu NoHo project that we started to work on several months ago. The long and the short of it was: cost overruns. Once the project had been started we were deemed a "night club", and putting a sprinkler system in the space became our responsibility. We tried to raise the additional funds through local banks, but as many of you know, no one is lending at the moment. And that was that. We were forced to back out.
It's a shame really. Northampton is a really cool city and we still feel that we would have done very well there. But there was no way we could afford to continue. C'est la vie.
So what's next? Will there ever be another Gulu? Stay tuned...
Meeting Up Isn't Hard to Do
I've really been impressed with the Meetup website and what it has done for a lot of the Gulu's patrons. It really has made it easier for a lot of folks to keep in touch with each other and to make plans together. If you haven't yet check it out. It's cool!
Bearduary & Marchstache
Get your beard on people! It's now February AKA the month of Bearduary!
So the deal is you men out there get to refrain from shaving for the month of February. Its good, and warm, although we do admit slightly itchy. However if you can score yourself a nice hunka beard this month then next month you will be all set up for March AKA the month of Marchstache!
In March 2010 the Gulu will be holding a best / most creative mustache competition!!! Yes! So get your beards growing & stay tuned!
Introducing …. Martini Mondays!
Just in case we forgot to tell ya... each Monday starting at 5:00 we feature a new martini for only 7 bucks! Come on down & see what our staff comes up with!
Valentine’s Day
You know we’re pretty low-key here at the Gulu, so we’re keeping it simple... This year we will be showing Casablanca all day and unveiling our new dessert plate featuring three small bites. Bring your date or just bring yourself!
The Salem Film Festival Returns!
The Salem Film Festival is entering its 3rd year and once again the Gulu is sponsoring one of the films - this year Gulu-Gulu Café will be sponsoring the film Automorphosis!
From the festival’s website: “What if you could morph your car into a mobile work of art, and drive it down the road for all to see? What would it look like? What would the world think of you? How would you be changed?” Automorphosis will be playing on the main screen on Sunday, February 28 at 1:40pm. Czech it out!
Calling all artists! We have two Arty Salem-centric events we thought you might want to know about...
The new South River Basin Harborwalk will be unveiled this June and the City of Salem is looking for artists & craftsmen to bring the ribbon cutting to life with the possibility of the selected work remaining in the park throughout the summer of 2010. Proposals are due March 4.
For more information, contact Frank Taormina at the City of Salem, DPCD at ftaormina@salem.com or 978-619-5685. The Salem Arts Festival is looking for submissions!
The deadline for proposals is March 15. This is a great opportunity for all types of artists out there. From their website: “The Salem Arts Festival will celebrate all the arts: painting, photography, sculpture, dance, music, writing, film, new media, performance, theatre, poetry, culinary and visual art.” For more information and a proposal application, click here: http://salemartsfestival.com/.
We hope you'll join us this New Year's Eve for our Masquerade Ball.
Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 the day of the party. Admission will get you in to a night of mystery with music by Big Blue Octopus, appetizers, and a champagne toast at midnight.
Tickets will be available the 2nd week in December and will SELL OUT!!!
What is a masquerade?
Everyone gets dressed up in fancy clothes (and sometimes costumes), all wearing masks. The idea is to be someone else for the night; have fun without revealing your identity. For more information on masquerade balls & their history, check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masquerade_ball.
Just to clarify, this is not a costume party. Don’t come dressed up as Spider-Man or a dead cheerleader. But that doesn’t mean you can’t get creative with your costume. Go modern, go classical Venetian, just GO to this event!
Get your masks and outfits ready for this fabulous night of shameless masquerading!
Come try some great wine for free! Our wine rep, Gary, will be here to chat & tell you about our latest offerings.

Yep Its True! The Gulu is growing!
On November 13th we signed a lease for the next version of the Gulu in Northampton MA!
For those of you who have not been out to NoHo, this is an incredibly cool college town. Smith College, Mt. Holyoke, Amherst College, U-Mass Amherst, and Hampshire are the five colleges in and around Northampton. The city has a vibrant music and art scene and a sophisticated coffee and beer culture.
We feel strongly that the Gulu is going to fit right in and thrive there! We’ve already started the buildout and hope to have the place up and running for early February!
Click the links below to see the progress. We'll be posting more pix as the project moves along.

Save the Music! - Recap!
Thank you to everyone who attended the Salem City Council meeting on Wednesday, July 22. The meeting set out to assess whether a revision of the city’s Noise Ordinance is necessary given the growth of downtown businesses and residential properties over the last few years. The danger for those of us who enjoy and/or provide live music and nightlife downtown is that a change in the ordinance could compromise what we are allowed to offer. Live entertainment could potentially be limited to earlier hours, without amplification, or who knows what else. A handful of residents voiced their opinion of how disruptive the downtown nightlife can be to those living in the area. Happily well over 100 people from all walks of life attended the meeting stressing how important music and nightlife is to the downtown and the city as a whole. Thank you again for everyone who were there!
The Gulu couldn’t be what it is without all of you! Your support is tremendous!
Ultimately the council decided to create a focus group including city officials, police, residents, and musicians to revise the ordinance. For more information, check out the Salem News article here (the Gulu’s own JD is even quoted!)

BEER! BEER! BEER!
Rain. Rain. Rain. What can we tell you to lift your spirits? Hmm … how about: WE HAVE DOUBLED OUR NUMBER OF DRAFT BEERS FOR A TOTAL OF 14!
Having more draft lines means we’ll be able to offer you more variety. Come on down for one of your favorites or try something new. Not to worry, we still have over 25 bottled beers in our arsenal, not to mention a handful of beer specials. Did you know we have beer specials? Well we do. Please ask your server about them. Many items are at discounted prices or some are beers auditioning for a spot on our regular menu. To view our list, go to www.GuluGuluCafe.com/menu/beer.pdf. Or better yet, pay us a visit. We miss you.
FIGHT THE POWER!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS - City Council Meeting - Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 - OPEN TO THE PUBLIC
You love live music don’t you? Of course you do. If you think it is important that the Gulu and other downtown establishments offer live entertainment, we could use your help. The ordinances committee of the Salem City Council will be discussing the possibility of revising the Noise Control chapter of the Salem Code of Ordinances. Because of a handful of displeased residents, the law could be changed. Pardon the expression, but the squeaky wheel gets the grease. We want to show the city that more people want the live music downtown to stay the way it is rather than to see it changed. Please attend the city council meeting. Come early. We want to pack the house with music-loving residents.
Wednesday, July 22 at 6:30 (get there early!) 93 Washington Street Council Chambers

Slow News Day?
On the morning of Tuesday June 16th a small article concerning the Gulu was printed in the Salem News. A story this big could not be contained and was then picked up by the Associated Press. The story was then reprinted in the Boston Herald, the Boston Globe, Salon.com, the Star Tribune (Minneapolis, MN), the Miami Herald, the Chicago Sun Times, the LA Times, and many many others. Before the day was out Fox 25 News, 7 News Boston, and the Channel 5 News had all sent camera crews to our café.
What was so freaking huge that all the major news outlets had to come to Salem to interview us?

We'll Miss You Little Buddy
Nearly two weeks ago Max, one of the Gulu mascots, passed away. Long time Gulu fans may remember that Marie and I rescued Max nearly 3 years ago from a family in Oklahoma.
A couple months back we noticed Max was having troubles with his breathing. Our vet informed us that Max most likely was much older than we were originally told (they estimated that he was probably around 10 years old) and that he had severe issues with his lungs. With medication he started to get better but then last week he suffered a setback. The doctors did everything they could to save him but he didn’t make it.
The Max that left us last week was a very different dog than the one that came to us 3 years ago. I wanted to thank all the Gulu fans and family that were so patient and sweet to Max over this time. You helped to make the last years of his life really special. Thank you.
Obviously poor Jack was feeling depressed in the aftermath of Max’s passing and we decided to get another dog right away…
Hello World!!!
The Gulu-Gulu Café proudly presents our newest Mascot-In-Training - Charles Maxwell Feldmann aka Charlie!
Charlie is only 9 weeks old and is a pure blooded pug. His interests include chewing on grass, furniture, Jack’s toys, and my fingers. He also enjoys chasing Jack around the house and waking us up in the middle of the night.
Charlie is not a replacement… no one could take the place of Mr. Max. Charlie only hopes that someday he will be embraced by the Gulu fandom and be able to graduate to the level of full-fledged Gulu Mascot (and of course get his own T-shirt!). Only time will tell.

Change is Good
Winter can be hard in the restaurant industry. Its cold outside, business slows up. But the one good thing is that its gives us time to plan improvements for the spring. We are always thriving to make things better at the Gulu.
So here we are – its late April – the sun is shining and we have made some new upgrades!
We have added some new cheeses to our Meat and Cheese Coalition. We have switched over our wine list. The beer list has been expanded once again (and we've added 3 additional taps). We’ve added stage lights for our (nearly) nightly entertainment. And last but not least we’ve replaced all of our patio furniture with stuff that is nice for your bum!
Spring is here ladies and gentlemen! Go Gulu!
Free Comic Book Day! - Saturday May 2nd
We Love Comics!!!! And our favorite local comic shop Harrison’s is hosting a free comic book day!
We will also be doing a promotion in concert with Harrison's – we’ll be offering 1 small free coffee or $1 off a latte or cappuccino. You can get our postcard which has been stickered with the promotion information at Harrison's. Please note that the promotion is good for Saturday, May 2 only.
Radio! Radio! - Live @ the Gulu-Gulu Cafe
Salem’s hardest working man in show business without a doubt Radio Scotvoid. His newest recording "Live @ the Gulu-Gulu Cafe" has now been released on UK net-label Earth Monkey Productions!
Download it now for free here! | Grab the cd cover here!
The Gulu’s weekly event Friday Night Spins has taken on a life of its own. Scott's performances over the past several months have been nothing less than extraordinary. His work transcends the electronica genre and depending who shows up to perform with Scott dictates where the music is going to go. Jazz, Blues, Trip-Hop, Rock... you never know quite what you are going to end up hearing but it always ends up being interesting and very very very cool.
Radio Scotvoid regularly performs at the Gulu-Gulu in Salem on the 1st Friday of every month - please note that this May he'll be performing on the 3rd and 5th Friday!
Good stuff this! Don't miss it!

“I hate good-byes. I know what I need. I need more hellos.” - Snoopy
I wanted to personally take a second to say goodbye and good luck to two of the Gulu’s closest friends – Ashley and John Nicholls.
John and Ashley have been a fixture at the Gulu-Gulu Café since its inception in Lynn waaaaaaaay back in 2005. John was a Berklee student moonlighting as a bartender at a local restaurant and Ashley was working as a nanny here in Salem. Ashley soon started working for the Gulu and immediately made an impact – all those fun & funky coffee drinks we offer like the “White Cloud”… well that’s all her. John started performing in the evenings a couple times a month as his alter-ego “John the Bartender” – performing blues versions of Nine Inch Nails covers – frakking brilliant!
Time passed, Ashley left the Gulu to get a professional job, and John finished school. Marie and I moved up to Salem and J&A soon moved up here as well (I think they were following us!). John helped Jeff Savlon start the enormously successful Open Mic back in January.
Not only have these two done a lot of great things for the Gulu over the years but more importantly they’ve become really great friends. This weekend our friends are moving to the great state of Vermont to bond with the birds, the bears, and the squirrels. I’m jealous of those damn squirrels.
So tonight at the Gulu we celebrate John and Ashley at the Open Mic where John is the featured performer. Hope to see you all here!

It’s the End of the World As We Know It…The Gulu-Gulu Café in Lynn is closing.
It’s true.
I know that the rumors of the café’s impending doom have been circulating since before we even opened. The conventional wisdom was that Central Square would never accept something like what we were offering. That the proper demographics just weren’t there.
Well they were there… for a little while at least. My feeling was that in an area like Lynn’s downtown if you built it “they” would come. The downtown has great potential – great architecture, it’s close to the ocean, and is right on the commuter rail. And “they” were coming to the city. From expensive places like Boston, to live in beautiful lofts that had been built downtown.
Marie and I were part of that Boston to Lynn crowd. We moved to Lynn in 2004 and in 2005 we built and opened the Gulu-Gulu Café. We made a café that we wanted to spend time in and found that there were others in the downtown that felt the same way.
I won’t lie - the Gulu-Gulu Café in Lynn wasn’t an enormous financial success. But the fact that it survived for 3 ½ years when most restaurants don’t even make it a year is a positive thing. Our 2nd Gulu opened in Salem late last summer and has been an enormous success. I never could have built the one in Salem if I hadn’t done the Lynn one first.
The financial and real estate market collapse hit downtown Lynn very hard. Many of the large condo projects that were supposed to have been built never got built. Some of the new condos that did get built sit empty. The restaurants and shops that were supposed to come never materialized. And as the markets shattered so did the attendance at Lynn’s Gulu. It’s gotten to the point that we can’t afford to keep it open.
I would like to thank all of our regulars who supported us. The City of Lynn for believing in us and helping us get our start. And most of all to our amazing staff, past and present, for making the Gulu in Lynn such a special place.
We had some great times there and we certainly plan on celebrating. Our last night will be December 13 2008. If you are around, come on down to the Lynn Gulu-Gulu Café for some good music, good friends, and one last good drink in downtown Lynn.
… And I Feel Fine.
Happy Turkey Day!
Everyone one loves turkey - especially Jack! The Gulu-Gulu Cafe (both locations) will be closed on Thursday November 27th. We'll see you back at the Gulu bright and early on Friday November 28th!
What a night! What a month! Man, I truly love Salem in October!
This year’s Gulu Halloween Bash was a huge success. Marie and I would like to thank the evening’s performers - DAGMAR, SCALLYWAGS, and WHAT TIME IS IT MR. FOX (who incidentally will be returning to the Gulu for Walter Sickert’s art opening on November 22). They were all completely brilliant!
Click here to see pix taken throughout Halloween evening at the Gulu-Gulu Café.
Radio Radio!
The Gulu’s weekly event Friday Night Spins has taken on a life of its own. This Friday’s featured performer is Salem’s own Radio Scotvoid. I must say that his performances over the past several months have been nothing less than extraordinary. His work transcends the electronica genre and depending who shows up to perform with Scott dictates where the music is going to go. Jazz, Blues, Trip-Hop, Rock... you never know quite what you are going to end up hearing but it always ends up being interesting and very very very cool.
Download Radio Scotvoid’s newly released album here.
Check out one of his Gulu performances here.
Watch his newest promo video (filmed throughout Salem) here.
Radio Scotvoid performs at the Gulu-Gulu in Salem on the 1st Friday of every month. Don't miss it!
Upcoming Art at the Gulu-Gulu: Salem

Oh what’s a nice Zombie to do?
There are so many cool things to do and see here in Salem during the month of October (including the Gulu Halloween Party with Dagmar and the Scallywags – don’t miss it!) – But the one event Marie and I have been anticipating more than anything else is Salem’s first Zombie Walk this Sunday October 5th! However our Zombie friends are having some troubles…
All these Zombies want to do on Sunday is to take a nice stroll through Salem. That’s what Zombies do after all – shuffle, walk, and stagger around. However the city is asking the Zombies to have a police detail - I’m guessing to make sure they don’t chew on anyone’s brains. Discrimination against Zombies is pretty well documented and most are unemployed. I’m asking my Gulu friends contribute something to help these good Zombie folks afford the police detail. Every little bit helps.

I personally want to thank everyone who supported our fundraiser for the Callahan family on Friday August 30th. Over 40 different local businesses donated items for Friday’s auction. Hundreds of people came out to attend the event and donated money. And by the end of the night over $11,000 was raised! This was truly unbelievable – you all should feel really proud for what you made happen.
I’m really beyond words right now. Our beloved Jocelyn passed away Monday morning. She was 25. Jocelyn was such a joy to have around the Gulu – always full of life and laughter. We are going to miss her greatly.
This Friday night The Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem is hosting a fundraiser to help the Callahan family deal with their tragic loss. Machine 475 will be heading the evening. Donations of any kind are welcome (we will be hosting a live auction that evening). Cover charge will be $10 and all proceeds from the evening will be given to the family.
Please spread the word – I hope to see everyone here on Friday night to celebrate Jocelyn’s short and amazing life.
The Salem News wrote a very nice piece on Jocelyn – click here to read the article.

Our Beer is Back and There’s Gonna Be Some Trouble...
Starting Tuesday April 1st the Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem will have its Liquor License back every single day of the week! Woo-hoo!!! And along with that our hours will change back to their normal times. Click here to see our updated opening hours.
We wanted to thank our Gulu fans for standing by us throughout the last couple months on the days that they couldn’t get their favorite beverages. And we also want to point out the City of Salem has been fantastic throughout this whole process - Marie and I aren’t so convinced that we could have kept the restaurant going during the winter months without the weekend permits that allowed us to serve alcohol. The city helped to keep us in business and we won’t forget that.

Salem Gulu Liquor License Issues
Many of you have heard the rumors. It’s sad but true - the Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem is temporally losing its liquor license starting this Wednesday, January 16th. Now before some of you start getting upset let me explain…
The long and the short of it – when the Gulu opened up in Salem this past summer the city didn’t have any more beer and wine licenses to give out and there weren’t any for sale on the open market. So we (and our beautiful neighbors at the Upper Crust pizzeria – great pizza – Yummy!) took the only option that was available at the time – a seasonal license. This allows the proprietor to serve beer and wine from April 1st – January 15th. Our time is up.
So what does this mean for our loyal lovers of Gulu beer and wine?
Short term: on “Event Days” (meaning primarily Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays – days we have live music at the café) the Gulu will be pulling special one-day permits so we can continue to serve. So if you need your Gulu beer fix (and can’t make it down to the Lynn Gulu) come in Thursday – Saturday and drink up! For the time being though Sundays – Wednesdays will be Prohibition Days at the Gulu.
Long term: the city has OK’d our request for a year around beer, wine, and cordial license and the formalities are now at the State level. I feel very confident that we will receive the license but it will probably take some time. Hopefully we will have it soon but if not we will go right back to having a seasonal license starting April 1st.
It could be worse.
New Art!
The Gulu-Gulu’s newest art show began on Monday January 7th and will run through March! This show is continuing to feature North Shore and Boston area artists... Adam O'Day, Adam Fitch, and Gabriel Kent. The work is incredibly cool and unique and we hope everyone loves it as much as we do.
T’was the night before Christmas at the Gulu café
Not a customer stirring, no tea, no latte.
The glasses were hung by the barside with care
With hopes perhaps “Toasty” might even appear.
The staff finishing up to get home to their beds,
While visions of tip-outs danced in their heads. Alicia in her apron – JD cleaning the tap, Jen counting the drawer, Steve with his night cap.
Then down in the basement arose such a clatter! Danny sprang to the stairs to see what was the matter.
When what to his wondering eyes would appear,
Just angry cook Joe, bring up wine and beer. Amanda blows out the candles without missing a beat,
While April laughs in the kitchen slicing some meat. Kara does one last lap looking for tips,
When the dishes crash – yep it was Tiff.
Through it all Andrea’s smile doesn’t wane,
She clears off the last dish – tuna on plain.
VW waiting filled with Jack, Max, and Marie,
Steve hurriedly finished his Kruso and brie.
With one final glance he peered all around,
Then sped to the coat rack in one single bound.
His eyes all a twinkle – his cheeks all a-glow,
The streaks in his hair the color of snow,
His signature backpack he flung on his back.
Keys in one hand and a cigarette pack.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
“Laura do you think you could wrap up the bread?”
As he climbed in the wagon to drive out of sight,
He exclaimed “GREAT JOB GUYS!”
And “HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!”
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone from the staff at Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem!

New Beer – New Wine… Oh My!
Beer and wine lovers – Christmas has come early to the Gulu-Gulu Café! We have brought some delicious and interesting beverages onboard for the holiday season – some highlights on our new wine list include:
Borgo Prosecco from Italy – a sparkling wine that isn’t too dry nor too sweet – beautiful stuff!
Eagle Eye Muscat from Napa County – A tropical fruit basket in a glass!
Lurgashall Christmas Mead from the UK – This honey mead allows for a very rich honey flavor with subtle hints of white grape.
Coffaro Escuro from Sonoma County – an unfiltered blend consisting of two Portuguese varietals combined with Dry Creek varietals.
And of course we’ve brought back the Svařené Vino - Hot mulled red wine made in Czech traditional style.
Our beer list is looking more exciting than ever too! This week we have started serving:
Victory Golden Monkey – made in Pennsylvania, the brewers used German malts and Belgian yeast to make a powerful (9.5% abv!) yet surprisingly drinkable light beer.
Lindeman Kriek from Belgium – considered to be the finest lambic Kriek in the world!
Unibroue Maudite AKA "The Damned One" – A very strong (8% alc/vol) Belgian style – spicy without being overpowering this amber-red ale offers a distinctive flavor that is cognac-like in complexity.
... And believe it or not there's even more new items on the list - click here to check out our newest beer and wine list.

Urban Elements in Lynn!
Two Lynn ladies that live in one of Lynn’s lovely lofts have decided to quit their day jobs to open a high-end home accessories store in Lynn on Oxford Street. Marie and I feel that this is a great step forward in the evolution of our downtown and we are very proud of Yadira and Kim. Urban Elements is opening to the public on Saturday, December 8th at 12PM. They are located directly next to the Downtown Bistro (one of our favorite local restaurants BTW). If you are in Central Square swing on by their store and check it out. Good luck guys!

It's time for a fashion show! Help save some Puppies!
The Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem is hosting the 2nd annual Modern Millie fashion show! For those of you that aren’t in the know, Modern Millie is a wicked cool clothing store stocked full of cute trendy modern clothes as well as vintage stuff.
This year’s theme is 9 to 5, (yes, just like that movie from 1980). Like previous Modern Millie fashion shows it will be more like a small theater production than your standard fashion show. Modern Millie’s lovely models will each be a character.
Styles are taken from the movie 9 to 5 and other late 70's and early 80's women's work wear. Some will be integrated with modern pieces but keeping with the theme. Tie necks, puff sleeves, jeans tucked into boots, ect. The music will be select favorites from the time period.
The date is September 23rd - doors open at 6PM and the show begins at 7PM. The Gulu will be putting out a light buffet and there is also a cash bar.
As if you needed another reason to attend the party - 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem. Woof! Tickets are $15 and can be purchased at Modern Millie. Modern Millie is located at 103 Washington St, Salem Ma. Please note: Tickets are very limited and will sell out!
It’s going to be a ton of fun! So put on your best retro and vintage threads and join us!
Looking for something to do this Saturday afternoon? Well if you aren’t planning on going to the Gulu-Gulu Café (shame on you!) we encourage you all to check out the Gulu's very own Alicia Marcaurelle as she skates with the Boston Massacre roller derby team!
Will the Dominion Derby Girls All-Stars be able to prove that Virginia isn't just for lovers, or will Boston's quad-skate militia once again bring the beatdown on their nemesisters from the south? Come and find out!

The Mayor is Coming! And Jeff Savlon Too!!! – The Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem Grand Opening Extravaganza Week!
Marie and I wanted to thank everyone for their patience as we worked out the kinks at the new Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem. The first month has been nothing less than incredible and we are very excited that we decided to make a go of it at this location.
We had to make some major adjustments soon after opening as we found the number of customers we were dealing with was mush greater than we could have imagined from the get-go. Now here we are a couple weeks later and we are feeling extremely good about how the staff has turned out and feel that that the time is right to have a traditional Grand Opening!
This Tuesday at 11:30, Kimberley Driscoll, the Mayor of Salem, will be cutting a ribbon at the Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem. Ms. Driscoll has been a great friend of the Gulu and even visited us at our Lynn location well before we opened our doors in Salem. It goes without saying that that kind of support goes a long way with Marie and me and is much appreciated. If you have the time - please come on down, meet the Mayor, and come celebrate with us!
Now for those of you that have a 9-5 job and won’t be able to make the ribbon cutting… please don’t fret. Our official grand opening celebration is going to take place this Friday night at 8PM! And we are going to be having one of our favorite Gulu performers Jeff Savlon providing the musical entertainment for this evening. Plus we will have balloons. Lots and lots of balloons! Don’t miss it!
Art is Cool! Yep it is!
Those of you who have ventured over to our location in Lynn over the past couple years may have seen some of Greg Orfanos’work (and if you don’t remember Greg - check out our Artist Archives page to check his work out). He is one of our favorite painters from the North Shore and he produced the original Jack Fenway painting that hangs over in Lynn. Well he has outdone himself once again with this great portrait of the “Mad” Max – Salem Gulu’s official mascot! If you have a moment, go to Greg’s MySpace page. He is nothing but incredible.
And speaking of incredible (and Art) – I have been absolutely astounded at how well Corey Corcoran’s paintings have been selling in Salem. We have had several folks who have liked a piece, neglected to buy it on the spot, and then found themselves out of luck a couple days later when that piece they wanted was sold. The shows in Salem and Lynn will be ending at the end of September – take my advice and support young artists – if you like a piece, buy it – it may be gone the next time you come in.

Thanks!
We wanted to thank everyone who has come out to support the new Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem over the past 2 ½ weeks. The absolute number of people that have come into our new location has been unbelievable… and at points overwhelming. We realize that some of our patrons have had less than stellar service at moments over the past few weeks. We wanted to thank everyone for their patience as our new staff gets up to speed. We are doing everything we can to work out the kinks as quickly as possible and to give all of you the kind of experience that you have come to expect from the Gulu-Gulu Café.
Celebrate the "Dog Days of Summer"
Everyone knows that we at the Gulu-Gulu Café LOVES puppies! Join us in Central Square, Lynn on Thursday, August 16 for the Dog Days of Summer Parade.
Well-behaved dogs are invited to come along. Please RSVP to stephen@northofboston.org. Arrangements have been made to ensure both you and your dog have a fabulous time.

Salem Gulu Update: Open!
Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem officially opened on Thursday July 26th! Marie and I wanted to thank everyone who came out – we purposely had a very quiet “soft” opening with no advertising whatsoever - and we were amazed how many people showed up throughout the day. Thank you all!
We also wanted to specifically thank the members of our staff in Salem – most of them had been showing up in their off hours over the past several weeks to help Marie and I finish the buildout – they really went above and beyond the call of duty to make this place look as cool as it does – Thanks guys! We couldn’t have done it without you!
We will be announcing a formal grand opening in the near future. Also, those of you who have been inquiring about music at Gulu Salem never fear – we are currently booking musicians for Salem and hope to have some live music for you very soon!

SALEM GULU UPDATE –we'll be opening at 8AM Thursday Morning! Yahoo!
July 19, 2007
SALEM GULU UPDATE - Well we were planning on opening tomorrow (July 20th) however some of the city inspectors are on vacation this week and won't be able to look at the new Gulu until early next week. Bummer. However we did get the liquor license today which is HUGE! We'll be open next week for sure. Go Gulu!
July 10, 2007
Salem Gulu Update: Close but no cigar - New Opening Date is July 20th!
Well we came pretty close to being ready to open for the end of the week but... we're not quite there. The buildout is nearly completed (floors have been sanded and stained, and the bar top is done and the signs have been carved) but we are still waiting for some very important permits... like our beer and wine license for instance. I don't know about all of you faithful Gulu Gurus out there but I can't imagine opening the new Gulu without having La Fin Du Monde on hand...
So the new official opening date is next Friday, July 20! Fingers are crossed that everything will be good to go!

Salem Gulu Update: No one... No one! No way! Gonna stop, Now; go!
Well that’s how it’s felt for the past couple months on the new Gulu project. Run! Stop. Hurry! Wait. Go! Stop… But as of this last week it’s all - NOW; GO!
The rough electrical and plumbing inspections were passed and our landlord RCG has started building the dividing wall between the new Gulu and our (TBD) next door neighbors. On Friday night we brought in the new wood for our floor and Sunday we moved all of our equipment and furniture to the new space. BIG props to all of our friends and staff members who came out and helped Marie and I over the weekend – it was a massive undertaking and we couldn’t have done it without you!
People have been asking about the opening date - I can now say with 99% certainty we will be opening in Salem on July 13th (yes - Friday the 13th)! Mark your calendars! GO GULU!
"What difference is there between a glass of absinth and a sunset?" - Oscar Wilde
Absinthe was the trademark drink during the heady days of 19th century Paris. Part of its popularity stemmed from its strength and artists and writers such as Picasso, Hemingway, Degas and Oscar Wilde all heavily indulged in it. It was such a powerful drink that in 1915 it was banned in the United States because people were hallucinating and going insane.
Absente, Absinthe Refined, is a modern version of the original Absinthe recipe. It's the same aromatic, dazzling emerald green liqueur made from a combination of exotic botanicals. The only difference is the Wormwood (the botanical that caused the initial ban) has been replaced with a less bitter cousin called Southern-Wormwood, which allows Absente to be served in the United States.
So come on down to the Gulu and have a sip of Absente – it’s just like Absinthe without the insanity!

Salem Gulu Update
Things have slowed down to a crawl on the Gulu 2 front as we await numerous inspections to take place. Gotta love a good bureaucracy! We hope to have more to report in the coming weeks.
In the meantime click here for a sneak peak at our newest Salem-centric T-Shirt image! We should have some for sale in the coming weeks!
ART! Part I: RAW Arts Auction! - Party with a Purpose
On May 19th, 2007 friends and fans of RAW will once again gather at RAW Space to bid on artwork, dance to some amazing music, and show their support for the kids and mission of RAW. Come check it out!
Where? RAW Space, 37 Central Square!
How Much? Only $35 a ticket!
The SoWa Art Walk is held every spring in the SoWa (South of Washington Street) neighborhood in Boston’s South End. A former mill building district where pianos, canned goods, shoes and other merchandise were made in the 19th century, the district has been home to artists’ studios carved out of the old factories for the last fifty years. Today, the artists have been joined by art galleries, creative businesses, cutting edge restaurants and the recent boom in residential loft buildings.
One of the Gulu’s old friends Oneil Pimentel is showing his work at 460 Harrison Ave this year! It's this Saturday and Sunday, May 19th-20th, from 11am - 6 pm!
Local favorites Mass Theatrica are up for the 2007 WBZ TV A-List for Boston's Best
Theatre Group! Please take a minute to cast your vote ASAP, so they can continue
to bring everyone quality live theatre, music, opera and more to Lynn!
While you are at it, check out their website for details on their Summer Concert Series!
Since our last posting we have taken some significant steps forward on the Salem expansion...
1. Marie and I passed the dreaded Salem DRB (Design Review Board) last week with the super-human help of our old friend architect and artist Jacob Higginbottom. After we had failed the design review the first time around Jacob leaped into the fray to produce some really snazzy floor plans for us. Click here and here to check them out!
2. A nice hunk of our funding has been received from the City of Salem and we have been able to purchase the majority of equipment that we will need.
3. Meanwhile our electrical work is being put in (“laying the pipe” I think is the term - although it does sound kinda pervy).
4. And our plumber started working on… no wait. He didn’t. He abruptly left for the Bahamas last week… Seriously. You can’t make this stuff up. Anyhow he got back this morning and is hard at work too.
Every so often something happens that really makes me proud of the changes in downtown Lynn. Last Saturday Lauren Slade, one of my Boston Machine Loft neighbors, helped to spearhead a massive downtown cleanup of the Central Square area. Over 60 people arrived to help – neighbors of all ages and nationalities - and worked throughout the morning and early afternoon. It was real great to see and brought a smile to my face. Central Square really is becoming a full-fledged neighborhood and I’m thrilled to be a member of it.
Our landlord RCG started their part of the buildout on March 29. They have started exposing the space’s brick and has been taking out the incredibly ugly lighting.

It’s a Gulu World!
The Associated Press picked up the “Romancing the Stove” article that was published in the Boston Globe a couple weeks back. This week we received a newspaper clipping from the Detroit Free Press in Michigan spotlighting the story. Visions of Eminem eating his Sunday breakfast and reading about the Gulu-Gulu Café danced in my head.
Also last week we received a link to the website of German photographer Johannes Horn. Mr. Horn had recently visited the States and apparently took a liking to everyone’s favorite Gulu mascot – Jack Fenway has offically hit Europe! Make sure to check out the rest of his site – the work is absolutely phenomenal.

We have received a TON of questions concerning the new space… here are some answers…

Yes we will be hiring, just not yet.
The concept is exactly the same - great beer, simple tasty food, local art, and amazing music. And puppies too!
Yes we plan to be open on Sundays.
Max will be the main mascot… however the Cult of Jack will continue!
No we are NOT closing the Lynn location. LYNN ROCKS!
Keep those questions coming… We’ll be updating the FAQ soon with a Salem-centric page.

A Sign of Things to Come?
Rumors have been flying about another Gulu popping up sometime in the near future. Nothing has been set in stone as of yet but we are hoping to have something more official to tell you all next week... In the meantime enjoy this little teaser image…
60 Mile Walk for Breast Cancer
Hannah Thomas, one of downtown Lynn's new residents and a great friend of the Gulu is doing a 60 mile walk to raise money for Breast Cancer organizations in August. She needs YOUR help!
The net proceeds will support breast cancer research, education,
screening and treatment through the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer
Foundation and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund.
For the privilege of walking 60 miles, she has agreed to raise at least
$2,200 in donations to fund research on breast cancer. She has a
personal website where you can make online donations: www.the3day.org/boston07/hantomtom

“The problem with the world is that everyone is a few drinks behind.” --Humphrey Bogart
Because YOU demanded it… the Gulu-Gulu Café once again features a draft beer! Hurrah! We are featuring one of our all time favorites – the original Anchor Steam from San Francisco!
Gulu Fun Fact: “Steam beer” is the only style of beer that is indigenous to the USA! So do your patriotic duty and come on down and consume our new draft!
Speaking of beer, we have recently brought on board a handful of other mouth-watering goodies… Saison Dupont from Belgium (Steve’s personal favorite), Wachusett Black Shack Porter from our local friends in Westminster Massachusetts, the Dogfish Head Indian Brown Ale from Delaware, and the Monty Python Holy Grail Ale (the only brew we know of that was tempered over burning witches!). Rejoice!

Meet The Artist Night! - Thursday February 15, 7:00PM
We have a brand new art show that is running through March – and it’s great! It’s true!
Come join us for Meet the Artist Night at the Gulu! On Thursday February 15, at 7:00 our featured artists, Miss Lyn Cardinal, Jennifer Lewis, and Dan Nolan will be appearing at the Gulu to meet with guests and talk about their work.
Recently it was brought to our attention that some Gulu fanatics out there have been talking about us on sites like Yelp and Chowhound! Check these sites out – it’s a great way to spread the "Cult of Gulu" and also to check out some other local haunts like the Capitol Diner, Tacos Lupita, and the Oxford Grill (errr… more on the Oxford in a second…).
The Oxford Grill
The Oxford Grill closed their doors right after the New Year. They will be sorely missed.
Soon after the Gulu opened in May 2005 the Oxford Grill opened its doors a couple blocks away. Oxford’s proprietor Lowell Grey took a major risk by opening up a high-end Central European style bistro in downtown Lynn. The food was unique and challenging and they won a “Best of Boston” award last year. The Gulu shared a lot with Oxford – we were both part of the Lynn Downtown “Renaissance” as some liked to call it - we shared many of the same clientele; a love for good coffee, beer, and wine, and most of all a belief in the potential of downtown Lynn.
We’re not sure what happened as all indications were that Oxford was doing well. Nevertheless Lowell Grey should be commended for taking a chance on our downtown. So on behalf of the Gulu-Gulu Café and our staff let me say thanks - Lowell you did good and we'll miss you.

As always, all art is for sale and can be purchased directly from the Gulu-Gulu Café. Check out the Gulu artist page for the entire scoop.

Mmmm... beer. Because YOU demanded it… we have a new and exciting Belgian-style from the Ommegang brewery: Three Philosophers
Three Philosophers is a remarkably strong ale (9.8% abv) brewed by Brewery Ommegang in response to a home brewer’s description of his dream beer. Realbeer.com, the internet’s largest beer website, hosted a contest called “Create a Great Beer.” Brewery Ommegang was chosen by Realbeer.com to brew the Belgian-style ale for the winning essayist. Noel Blake, a home brewer from Portland wrote the winning description for what his “dream beer” would be like.

Please Allow Me to Introduce Myself
Marie and I wanted to welcome the newest member of the Gulu-Gulu
family - “Mad” Max Feldmann! We found this little
bugger on petfinder.com and adopted him with the assistance of the Friends of the Animals,
Inc. (Specializing in Boston Terriers).
Last week he was given up for adoption by a family that clearly
didn’t appreciate him and three days ago he started the
long bus journey from Oklahoma to Rhode Island where we picked
him up. Based on his behavior he was definitely mistreated by
a member(s) of his previous “family”. He arrived extremely
skittish and shy – however only 24 hours after we picked
him up he has begun to act more and more trusting and sweet. Jack
of course is pretty excited to have a big brother to jump all
over!
Many people don’t realize this but there are literally
hundreds of thousands of great dogs looking for new homes throughout
the U.S. Petfinder is a great way to track one down – so if you are considering
getting a new dog Marie and I ask that you please consider adopting.

Fourth of July Holiday
Just a reminder to all you Gulu-Gurus out there –
we will be closed for the 4th of July Holiday (this
Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday). We’ll re-open on Wednesday
July 5th. Have a fun and safe holiday weekend!
Yes - We Are Still Open!
We’ve received a lot of worried e-mails and calls
this week concerning the scaffolding outside our café.
I am here to tell you that YES the Gulu-Gulu is still open
and will remain so while work is being done on the outside
of the building.
So what’s going on? Well basically the Keith Building
that was reconditioned last year by our landlord the Mayo
Group has been leaking like a broken pipe since we all moved
into the building. The project to re-seal the brick is estimated
to take several weeks. Hopefully when they complete their
work the building will be water tight. Our fingers are crossed.

We wanted to give a HUGE shout out to our friend Greg Orfanos
- many of you may remember Greg's art
show that took place at the Gulu over the Spring - well the
man has really outdone himself with this magnificent portrait
of Mr. Jack Fenway which is now hanging proudly at the café.
Amazing work this - thanks again Greg!

Happy
Happy Joy Joy! - Happy Birthday Gulu-Gulu!
A year ago this Thursday Marie and I opened the Gulu-Gulu Café
in Central Square. I remember feeling quite nervous on Opening
Day. It was a fairly risky venture and we had put everything we
had into it. Lynn’s downtown, once a thriving shopping district,
was devoid of people and businesses.
... Would people come back to Lynn’s downtown? Would people
like our place? Would they enjoy the food?
Well, here we are a year later. We’ve proved the cynics
wrong… people have returned to Central Square and people
have come to the Gulu-Gulu. Most importantly, people keep coming
back. Marie and I are extremely grateful for everyone who has
supported us during our first year. We couldn't have done it without
you. Thank you so much!
We wanted to invite all of our friends and guests to join us
at the Gulu-Gulu Café this Thursday, May 18th at 6PM to celebrate the Gulu’s 1st birthday. Our good friend John
Nicholls will be providing the beautiful music! Rumors of
cupcakes, balloons, and an appearance by Jack are abound!

A Sign of What’s NOW
Nick
Schillaci, an extremely talented student from Mass Art,
created the Gulu-Gulu's newest signage and this week it
was hung by Lynn’s Malco Metal Fabricators (looking
to have some work done give 'em a call - 781-599-6364)!
This new sign is located directly over the sidewalk in
front of our fabulous café. So if you are in Central
Square trying to find the Gulu-Gulu and are completely lost
amongst all the crazy and weavey one-way streets - just
look up and you'll see us!
… and if you are afraid that you are going to have
a hard time finding parking in the square just print out
this nifty Downtown
Lynn Parking Map before you go - brought to you by our
good friends at Lynn City Hall!

Gulu-Gulu Sweet Stuff Update...
Because YOU demanded it… we are once again serving the extremely
popular Cappuccino Cheesecake! This thing is ridiculous... chocolate
cookie crust and a creamy chocolate filling laced with cinnamon
and coffee and topped with a bittersweet chocolate glaze and finished
with chocolate shavings. Mein Gott!!!
As Benjamin Franklin once said, "Beer
is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." Truer
words have never been spoken.

My Mommy Is Going To Be So Proud Of Me!
The Gulu-Gulu Cafe was awarded a "Commitment to Lynn"
award by the Lynn Chamber of Commerce this Thursday morning. As quoted
from the Daily Item: “The recognition is for member businesses that
have demonstrated outstanding commitment to doing business in Greater
Lynn.”
Marie and I were shocked when we were told that we would
be one of the recipients of this year’s award and we are very very
very touched. Thank you.
On Tuesday I went in front of Lynn's City Council
to ask for permission so that the Gulu-Gulu Café can erect additional
signage. The design of this new sign is similar to our existing sign -
however it will protrude over the sidewalk thus increasing our exposure
to incoming traffic that might otherwise overlook us as they move thru
the maze we call Central Square. The City Council in their immeasurable
wisdom gave us the thumbs up and we plan to have the signage up shortly
after the New Year.

Press Reports…
The renaissance of Lynn and
the Gulu-Gulu Café in particular have received quite a bit of positive
press over the past 6 months or so – of special note is an article
that appeared in last week’s Boston Sunday Globe North titled Lynn
wasn't the first choice, but the city has plenty of allure by Lynn newcomer Linda Werbner – I think this piece really sums
up the excitement of how a lot of us new Lynners are feeling right now.

A
Bench is Born!
We wanted to take a moment to thank Lynn’s City Council who last
Tuesday voted to allow Lynn restaurants to have benches outside their
establishments! We believe that having an outside place for our clientele
to sit will only add to their experience dining in Lynn’s downtown.
Thank you!

Gulu has a new draft beer: Bürgerbräu from the Czech
Republic
And now a little history lesson...
B.B. Bürgerbräu was first brewed in 1802 in Ceské
Budejovice when it was called “Budweiser Bürgerbräu”.
The beer from the City of Budweis is considered to be the finest brewed
beer in the world and B.B. Bürgerbräu is the original standard
bearer.
Champagne is to France as B.B. Bürgerbräu is to the Czech
Republic. B.B. Bürgerbräu is a full bodied, world class European
lager. In other words – YUMMY!
B.B. Bürgerbräu - Gulu’s new Draft Beer of the Month
- only $4.00 a pint!

RAW Arts!
Marie and I want to thank the students at RAW Arts for putting together
a signage board for our café. The sign looks amazing! These guys
really went above and beyond what we expected when we approached them
to do this project!
For those of you who don’t know about RAW Arts, they are a local
nonprofit youth arts organization that for the past 17 years has provided
innovative ways for young people to engage in art. The art work that we’ve
seen come out from RAW is phenomenal and we plan on spotlighting some
of their student’s work in our Fall exhibit.
Thanks
to all of you who gave help and support over the last week and a half.
We also wanted to formally thank Mauricio and Anthony of the Merrimack
Property Maintenance Group (617-884-1818) for putting our café
back together so quickly. If anyone out there gets flooded and needs new
floors call these guys!
See you at the Gulu!

Devolution of a Café – Flooding at Gulu-Gulu
As many of you have heard, the Gulu-Gulu Café was shut down last Monday, May 23rd. The water damage turned out to be
much worse than we originally thought. Click
here to see photos of the mess.
The rebuilding has taken longer as well. We have a crew working tirelessly
here at the Gulu to try to get everything back up and running for this
upcoming week. We believe that our grand re-opening will be this Thursday,
June 2nd.
Marie and I wanted to thank everyone who has called, stopped by, or sent
us letters of support this week. The community here in Lynn is the best!
The one good thing that came out of the chaos is that we had an opportunity
to get out of town this Saturday night. We headed up to The
Welch House Inn in Booth Bay Harbor (which was recently voted the
"Best of the Best" by Fodor's). Need to get away? Check them
out (and tell them Steve and Marie sent you)!
Thank you again for your support and understanding. We hope to see you
all down at the Gulu!

The Opening!
Gulu-Gulu Café's
Grand Opening took place on Thursday May 12, 2005! Even though we did
very little traditional advertising, the café was packed from opening
to closing and we were forced to turn people away over an hour after we
had closed our doors!
Mayor Chip Clancy of Lynn and members of Lynn’s City Council joined
the festivities and helped us in the cutting of the opening day ribbon.
Also some new news reports about the café have been published! Click here to read them.

The Gulu-Gulu Buildout - Pix
Instead of boring you
all with all the details of the buildout we thought that it would be best
to show you. Please note that images will pop up in a new window.
05.10 - 05.11.05 - Almost there! Members
of our staff are being trained on wines and cooking. The finishing work
is nearly complete.
04.26 - 05.07.05 - Crunch time is here! The opening has been pushed
back a couple days to give us a bit more of a cushion. The basement is being
completed as we speak and we have hired our staff.
Our first major artist, Boston's Bren
Bataclan has delivered all of his paintings. The basement
is being constructed and the floor plan for the dining area is being finalized. Chairs
are being painted and reupholstered and the office is nearly finished.
04.15 - 04.24.05 - The
place is starting to take shape! Molding was placed around the space
and the metal was put on the bar. We also have a sneak preview of the
work of our first featured artist - Bren
Bataclan! The office
wall was built and the floor was put down.
04.07 - 04.13.05 - My brother Michael came all the way
down from the Welch
House Inn (his bed & breakfast in Maine) to help
build the bar and hang our signage. The equipment has been put in place and the furniture
is being moved in. Zorzy Electric has completed installing
the lighting. Click here to see the progress.
04.02.05 - We gathered some friends to help with the painting.
12.14.04 - Jacob and I took pictures of the gutted
space.

Hello everyone!
Six weeks have passed since our last update. We had planed to have the
café open by now however circumstances beyond our control pushed
the project out a little bit. Although it is completely possible that
we will get the work done earlier, we are currently aiming for a May 1st
2005 opening date.
Things are going extremely well. The state of Massachusetts has granted
us our beer and wine license. The lease on the space has been agreed to.
Our funding has been received from the City of Lynn. Plus we have been
able to purchase the majority of equipment that we will need.
Our landlord should be finished with their work by next week after which
we will start our build out.
A couple items of interest:
We have finalized our menu. Click here to view it. Let us know what you think!
Our good friend Jacob Higginbottom has updated the floor plan for Gulu-Gulu.
Check it out here!
Thank you for your patience!

Hello! This week the progress on Gulu-Gulu Café has taken another
couple steps forward...
On Tuesday we were granted approval for a wine and malt beverage license,
a common victualler license, and an entertainment license by the city
of Lynn.
Also last Saturday the Gulu-Gulu website was made public. It is a work
in progress but we hope you like it so far.
If all goes well we hope to have some big news next week!
