Our Beer is Back and There’s Gonna Be Some Trouble...
Starting Tuesday April 1st the Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem will have its Liquor License back every single day of the week! Woo-hoo!!! And along with that our hours will change back to their normal times. Click here to see our updated opening hours.
We wanted to thank our Gulu fans for standing by us throughout the last couple months on the days that they couldn’t get their favorite beverages. And we also want to point out the City of Salem has been fantastic throughout this whole process - Marie and I aren’t so convinced that we could have kept the restaurant going during the winter months without the weekend permits that allowed us to serve alcohol. The city helped to keep us in business and we won’t forget that. |

Salem Gulu Liquor License Issues
Many of you have heard the rumors. It’s sad but true - the Gulu-Gulu Café in Salem is temporally losing its liquor license starting this Wednesday, January 16th. Now before some of you start getting upset let me explain…
The long and the short of it – when the Gulu opened up in Salem this past summer the city didn’t have any more beer and wine licenses to give out and there weren’t any for sale on the open market. So we (and our beautiful neighbors at the Upper Crust pizzeria – great pizza – Yummy!) took the only option that was available at the time – a seasonal license. This allows the proprietor to serve beer and wine from April 1st – January 15th. Our time is up.
So what does this mean for our loyal lovers of Gulu beer and wine?
Short term: on “Event Days” (meaning primarily Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays – days we have live music at the café) the Gulu will be pulling special one-day permits so we can continue to serve. So if you need your Gulu beer fix (and can’t make it down to the Lynn Gulu) come in Thursday – Saturday and drink up! For the time being though Sundays – Wednesdays will be Prohibition Days at the Gulu.
Long term: the city has OK’d our request for a year around beer, wine, and cordial license and the formalities are now at the State level. I feel very confident that we will receive the license but it will probably take some time. Hopefully we will have it soon but if not we will go right back to having a seasonal license starting April 1st.
It could be worse. |

New Art!
The Gulu-Gulu’s newest art show began on Monday January 7th and will run through March! This show is continuing to feature North Shore and Boston area artists... Adam O'Day, Adam Fitch, and Gabriel Kent. The work is incredibly cool and unique and we hope everyone loves it as much as we do.

The Night Before Christmas
T’was the night before Christmas at the Gulu café
Not a customer stirring, no tea, no latte.
The glasses were hung by the barside with care
With hopes perhaps “Toasty” might even appear.
The staff finishing up to get home to their beds,
While visions of tip-outs danced in their heads.
Alicia in her apron – JD cleaning the tap,
Jen counting the drawer, Steve with his night cap.
Then down in the basement arose such a clatter!
Danny sprang to the stairs to see what was the matter.
When what to his wondering eyes would appear,
Just angry cook Joe, bring up wine and beer.
Amanda blows out the candles without missing a beat,
While April laughs in the kitchen slicing some meat.
Kara does one last lap looking for tips,
When the dishes crash – yep it was Tiff.
Through it all Andrea’s smile doesn’t wane,
She clears off the last dish – tuna on plain.
VW waiting filled with Jack, Max, and Marie,
Steve hurriedly finished his Kruso and brie.
With one final glance he peered all around,
Then sped to the coat rack in one single bound.
His eyes all a twinkle – his cheeks all a-glow,
The streaks in his hair the color of snow,
His signature backpack he flung on his back.
Keys in one hand and a cigarette pack.
A wink of his eye and a twist of his head,
“Laura do you think you could wrap up the bread?”
As he climbed in the wagon to drive out of sight,
He exclaimed “GREAT JOB GUYS!”
And “HAVE A GREAT NIGHT!”
Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone from the staff at Gulu-Gulu Café: Salem! |

New Beer – New Wine… Oh My!
Beer and wine lovers – Christmas has come early to the Gulu-Gulu Café! We have brought some delicious and interesting beverages onboard for the holiday season – some highlights on our new wine list include:
- Borgo Prosecco from Italy – a sparkling wine that isn’t too dry nor too sweet – beautiful stuff!
- Eagle Eye Muscat from Napa County – A tropical fruit basket in a glass!
- Lurgashall Christmas Mead from the UK – This honey mead allows for a very rich honey flavor with subtle hints of white grape.
- Coffaro Escuro from Sonoma County – an unfiltered blend consisting of two Portuguese varietals combined with Dry Creek varietals.
- And of course we’ve brought back the Svařené Vino - Hot mulled red wine made in Czech traditional style.
|
Our beer list is looking more exciting than ever too! This week we have started serving:
- Victory Golden Monkey – made in Pennsylvania, the brewers used German malts and Belgian yeast to make a powerful (9.5% abv!) yet surprisingly drinkable light beer.
- Lindeman Kriek from Belgium – considered to be the finest lambic Kriek in the world!
- Unibroue Maudite AKA "The Damned One" – A very strong (8% alc/vol) Belgian style – spicy without being overpowering this amber-red ale offers a distinctive flavor that is cognac-like in complexity.
... And believe it or not there's even more new items on the list - click here to check out our newest beer and wine list. |

Urban Elements in Lynn!
Two Lynn ladies that live in one of Lynn’s lovely lofts have decided to quit their day jobs to open a high-end home accessories store in Lynn on Oxford Street. They are located directly next to the Downtown Bistro (one of our favorite local restaurants BTW). If you are in Central Square swing on by their store and check it out. Good luck guys! |

This year’s theme is 9 to 5, (yes, just like that movie from 1980). Like previous Modern Millie fashion shows it will be more like a small theater production than your standard fashion show. Modern Millie’s lovely models will each be a character.
Styles are taken from the movie 9 to 5 and other late 70's and early 80's women's work wear. Some will be integrated with modern pieces but keeping with the theme. Tie necks, puff sleeves, jeans tucked into boots, ect. The music will be select favorites from the time period.
The date is September 23rd - doors open at 6PM and the show begins at 7PM. The Gulu will be putting out a light buffet and there is also a cash bar.
As if you needed another reason to attend the party - 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales will be donated to the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem. Woof!
