First Thursday is always Cask Night - Fisherman's Brewery is hooking us up with the Dead Eye Double IPA - fresh and delicious! Tapping commences at 6PM.

We also need to thank our staff - these are the guys that make us look good each and every day. We couldn't be prouder of the way they handled the onslaught of people - with patience, with a smile and with a laugh.

And of course we have to thank Walter Sickert and the Army of Broken Toys for a great Halloween performance. Well done!

And without further adieu click here to check out some pix from Halloween night at the Gulu!

Changes!

Do you like change? We do!

Since we opened we've continually added things at the Gulu in order to enhance your experience here. And this year is no different. Within the last two months we have remade our kitchen, added new POS terminals, purchased a top of the line sound system for the bands, and installed 10 new draft lines (24 in all!)!

Why? Wasn't everything fine? Well sure! But we felt we could be ever better!!

The bottom line is we wanted to get our food out to you faster, give you more choice from our bar list, and the music sounds 100% better!

We hope you like all the changes we've made and we look forward to your feedback!

September 2011

Hurricane Irene!

What do you think about Hurricane Irene? How are you preparing? Salem Patch asked and some Gulu Cafe kids answered.

New Pups!

Those of you who popped into the Gulu this morning may have noticed the 2 new paintings hanging up in the cafe. Gulu artist alumni and overall superwoman Lauren Minco was commissioned to paint these new interpretations of the Gulu mascots Jack and Charlie. Personally I love them!  Thanks Lauren!

... and yes our friend Gabe over at Gorilla Printing right here in Salem is hard at work making the new Jack painting into our newest T-shirt. It should be in-house in the coming weeks. Be on the look out!

Beer Specials!

As always we are continually updating our beer menu here at the Gulu. Here are two standouts that you really ought to know about...

This week we are featuring JavaHead from Troegs Brewing Company as our cask of the month! JavaHead Stout contains a blend of locally roasted espresso and Kenyan coffee beans by St. Thomas Roasters in Linglestown, PA.

This wekeend we taped the Dogfish Head Hellhound On My Ale! We are featuring this limited edition beer on draft right now!

2011 marks the 100th birthday of Mississippi Delta bluesman Robert Johnson who, according to legend, sold his soul down at the crossroads in a midnight bargain and changed music forever. Working again with our friends at Sony Legacy (yup, the same folks we did our Miles Davis-inspired Bitches Brew with), Dogfish Head pays tribute to this blues legend by gettin the hellhounds off his trail and into this finely-crafted ale.

Hellhound is a super-hoppy ale that hits 100 IBUs in the brewhouse, 10.0 ABV, 10.0 SRM in color, and dry-hopped with 100% centennial hops at a rate of 100 kilos per 100 barrel brew-length. To accentuate and magnify the citrusy notes of the centennial hops (and as a shout out to Robert Johnsons mentor Blind Lemon Jefferson) Dogfish Head add dried lemon peel and flesh to the whirlpool.

Keeping it real!

We have unleashed our latest and greatest menu with some pretty groovy changes including....

A New Panini! - The Grün Münster – Ham, tomato, and pepperoncini  topped with American muenster cheese!
A New Salad! - Arugula Pepper Salad –  Arugula, peppers, cucumbers, and apples tossed in a lemon / olive oil dressing!
A New Dessert! - The Toasted Almond Cake!
A New Wrap! - Chicken Salad – Chicken, mixed with red onions, walnuts, cranberries and mayo. Served with greens!

Whoa! Yeah! - Check out our newest menu here.

Beer Specials
This week we are featuring 2 incredibly limited draft beers plus a cask!

Chatoe Rogue Wet Hop Ale American IPA! Man this is a great one! Wet hop ales (otherwise known as Fresh Hop Ales) are a little-brewed type of beers where hops are taken from vine to brew within 24 hours, skipping the drying step that allows hops to last in storage but causes them to lose many volatile oils. Many brewers go through extreme feats to get their hops this fast, but some go above the others. One of these is Rogue Ales in Newport, OR. They have launched a new line of Rogue beers called "Chatoe Rogue," a play on the french "Chateau" normally used in the wine industry. To brew these beers, they've launched what can only be called a brew farm, where they grow both malting grain and hops.

Stone Highway 78 Scotch Ale is a collaboration beer, made with a few other San Diego breweries: Pizza Port and Green Flash Brewing. Stone's collaboration beers are often a thing to celebrate, and Highway 78 is no exception. Teaming up with Green Flash and Pizza Port Carlsbad, Stone crafted a spicy, toasty and sweet interpretation of a strong Scotch ale.

This month's 1st Thursday cask (4/7/2011) is Fisherman's Greenhorn Double IPA!

Click here to see our updated Beer Menu!

Big Gulu Merchandise Sale!

We have slashed our prices on our 2009 & 2010 T-shirt and tote bag inventory. T-shirts and bags are only $10 (normally $16 and $15 respectively). Please be aware that shirts are limited and are selling out.

... and keep your eyes open for our new 2011 T-shirts sometime in the coming months!

Salem Film Fest
Thirty marvelous and bracing documentaries comprise the 2011 Salem Film Fest, presented at CinemaSalem in Salem, Massachusetts, which makes Salem the largest documentary festival in New England. Two-thirds of the films will likely have representatives attending and dialoging before and after their films, making for a truly unique and powerful cinematic experience.

This year the Gulu is sponsoring the film "Con Artist" - A highly energetic dark comedy that focuses on once-infamous "business artist" Mark Kostabi whose obsession with regaining his lost stature manifests itself in bizarre attempts to find happiness through fame, which he openly equates with love. The movie takes places Sunday Mar 6 at 5:00PM.

For more information check out: http://www.salemfilmfest.com/all-films/con-artist

Beer Specials
This week we are featuring 2 incredibly limited draft beers plus a cask!

Firestone 14th Anniversary Ale is an American Strong Ale (ABV: 12.50%!)  Only brewed once, Firestone 14 Anniversary Ale is a complex brew with a true depth of flavors. It pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The common thread in this brew is the Bourbon barrel aging, which shows in both the aroma and the flavor.

Fisherman's Tea Party is locally made in Gloucester, MA. An American-style barley wine that is mahogany in color with a smoked malt aroma and flavors of pine, peat, oak and black tea. Brewed with Lapsang Souchang Black Tea, which was one of the teas dumped into Boston Harbor by the Sons of Liberty (thinly disguised as Naragansett Indians) in 1773.

Cask Night!!! - Thursday March 3, tapped at 6PM - On the 1st Thursday of the month come on in for a nice warm pint of something local! This month the Gulu is featuring Geary’s Hampshire Special Ale (English Strong Ale)! Hampshire has a huge toasted malt flavor balanced by assertive hoppiness. The finish is long and lingering with the malt and hop notes blending with alcohol warmth.

Mardi Gras - Fat Tuesday
Join local favorites Squeezebox Stompers Trio (Cajun/ Blues) as we celebrate the start of Mardi Gras! Tuesday March 8, 8PM

Marchstache!
Join us on Thursday March 31 at 8PM for our 2nd annual Marchstache competition! Contestants will compete in three categories: best natural mustache, most creative mustache, & best fake mustache. Each winner will receive a $25 Gulu-Gulu Cafe gift card!
