Saturday
August 4, 2007 - Gulu-Gulu Cafe: Lynn
For the 3rd year running downtown Lynn was packed for the Annual Meet Me Downtown Festival and a great time was had by all! That evening Lynn native Anthony Migliaccio was accompanied by saxophonist and good friend Evan Greenspan.
With 15 years of jazz experience and a robust psychedelic/progressive rock palate, Evan provided saxophonic sounds to all songs played throughout the evening. With original music, jazz jams, and covers from, but not limited to, the likes of Radiohead & George Harrison it was a focused yet eclectic evening of music.

Fluttr Effect Trio
Acoustic / Pop / Alternative
Thursday June 14, 2007
This wing of Fluttr Effect forgoes the rock essentials of guitar and drums, reimagining and reexamining the work of the full band with new arrangements that suit the interplay of their eclectic instrumentation.
The delicate weaving of warm-toned marimba, rich cello, and insistently haunting vocals emphasizes the vibrancy and intimacy of their songs. In this more acoustic setting the Fluttr Effect Trio exposes the bare bones of their music, revealing a sound that is vivid and moving.

Mando
Acoustic / Psychedelic / Jam Band
Saturday May 26, 2007
Mando started playing guitar about 11 years ago. Since then, he's picked up the mandolin and has recently added harmonica to the mix. He used to perform in a couple rock/jam bands out in Grand Rapids Michigan and has also composed baroque & atonal music for the piano. Having grown up in Eastern Mass this is his first time being home for any regular amount of time in about 5 years. He recently finished hiking the Appalachian trail from Georgia to Maine, which was the inspiration for a couple of the tunes on his MySpace page.

Matthew Joy
Acoustic / Jazz
Thursday April 26, 2007
Guitarist Matthew Joy, an innovative musician and composer, brings forth a refreshing sound, blending different styles of music including jazz, folk, Brazilian, blues, rock, and world.
Throughout college Matthew was immersed in developing the craft of composing and solo guitar playing. Being introduced to the music of such artists as Ralph Towner, and Egberto Gismonti, Matthew became hooked onto the sound of the acoustic guitar. This style of playing was intriguing to him because of the intimacy, and subtleties of acoustic nylon and 12-string guitars, coupled with the fact that not many people were doing this. Matthew began broadening his style studying jazz composition at Berklee College of Music in Boston. Here he was composing for large ensembles, studying varieties of Latin, African, Eurasian, and Asian music, and taking guitar lessons with Jon Damian and Mick Goodrick. Matthew's compositions have been performed and recorded by other artists in Boston, New York , and in Europe.

Dan Blakeslee
Indie / Rock / Folk
Saturday March 24, 2007
Dan Blakeslee's music, categorically speaking, is impossible to classify. It sparks images of melted candles in city square vigils, lone tree hills or a shoreline drive at dawn. Blakeslee seems unconcerned with where the songs fall, only that hes tapped into their ghostly essence and emerged with a blinding account of life itself.
After attending the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Blakeslee ventured northward to Boston. He toiled with his acoustic in the smoke-laden subways before slowly rolling his influences (Leonard Cohen, Red House Painters, The Smiths, Jeff Buckley, Vic Chestnut, Radiohead, Tom Waits and the aforementioned Cash) into his own eclectic blend of music with chameleon-like appeal.

The Milling Gowns
Indie / Rock
Thursday March 22, 2007
Reminiscent of the Smiths, Depeche Mode, Nick Cave, Leonard Cohen, and the Magnetic Fields, their songs are mostly slow, stately and sad. Gorgeous too. It's not the kind of music people tend to go out to see for a classic "good time." But the rewards are there and sometimes deeper. The Milling Gowns feature singer/ songwriter “M”, pianist Sharon Crumrine, John Stazinski on bass, Jeffrey Scott Mays on drums and electric violinist Betty Widerski (who also performs with Gulu favorite Reverend Bob and the Darkness).

Dagmar 2 (Experimental / Glam / Rock) with John Nicholls & The Sinful 3 (Acoustic / Folk Rock)
Saturday March 3, 2007
DAGMAR 2 is a 21st century alt-rock opera band. They have recently released their first CD, "Door No. 1" about a guy who can't get out of bed in the morning and an insect goddess who plunges through the ether to rescue him. It's idiosyncratic, lyric-driven music & narrative, with frequent comparisons made to Nina Hagen, Flaming Lips, Kate Bush, The Who's "Tommy" and Pink Floyd's "The Wall".
What anchors the band is the singers’ voices: his is weary and experienced, hers is hauntingly beautiful, and they play back and forth over a soundtrack that is equal parts rock fury and jazzy resignation. Their energy, even as they sing about wanting to stay in bed all day, is contagious.

Jenn Taranto
Ambient / Folk
Thursday October 12, 2006
The ambient and moody vibe of the Cocteau Twins, Sigur Ros and Bjork and the personal writing of Ani Difranco, Joni Mitchell and P.J. Harvey, are all apparent in Jenn’s debut album, Move on from Me. With the artistic and creative influences of her boyfriend and musician, Justin Kipp and the violin additions of Katie Quann, her music has become an epic and lush work of art.
In 2004 Jenn was named a finalist and received an “honorable mention” in the U.K. Songwriting Competition, The Great American Song Contest and Song of the Year, with her song “This Weather”. 28
Degrees Taurus with Oftenairborne
Psychedelic / Ambient / Rock
Thursday August 3, 2006
Boston-based 28 Degrees Taurus has seen many incarnations
over their nearly ten-year existence as a band/concept.
Their current sound is centered around the asian pentatonic
scale based reverb drenched guitar and voice work of founder
Jinsen. There is also a sharp separation between their
studio world and their live world. The records are dreamy,
intimate and romantic pieces that sit somewhere between
a Slowdive record and a Japanese folk-song. The live shows
are a loud, ultra high energy, psychedelic, noise and
chaotic freak out session that feature Barry Marino (AKA Oftenairborne)
on drums.

The
Accident That Led Me to the World with Special Guest Jerry Fels
Acoustic / Folk / Down-tempo
Saturday June 10, 2006
"the accident that led me to the world" is based, firstly,
upon a four track tape containing the tracks the accident... and
small way. And secondly, a story that later developed from the content
of these songs. While the band can be referred to as "the accident",
it is merely the project at hand. The songs sing of being frightened,
aware, and alone amidst a sea of people immersed in directionless
worry. The underying plot of a small boy escaping to a deserted
island, gaining the prize of life's true value: hope and time.

Downtown “Meet and Greet II”
Thursday October 13th
On Thursday October 13th we hosted a
"meet and greet" party at the cafe so newcomers to Lynn would
have an opportunity to get to know each other. We had a great crowd down
at the Gulu-Gulu and we wanted to thank everyone who found the time to
participate.
We also wanted to thank Simon Templar, from Remax Real
Estate Specialists who sponsored the food for this event. To contact Simon
please call 617.680.3684 or email simon_templar@comcast.net.

Downtown
“Meet and Greet” at the Gulu-Gulu Café - Recap
Thursday, July 7, 2005
On Thursday, July 7th the Gulu-Gulu Café held the 1st downtown
“Meet and Greet” for new neighbors in downtown Lynn. The event
was enormously successful and was standing room only for the majority
of the evening. In addition International-Superstar DJ G Amor spun some
tremendous tracks all night!

Marie and I would personally like to thank Kim
Dorazio from Taché
